Why Did We Start Operation Geranium?
Operation Geranium was born out of Steve’s, Founder of Operation Geranium, recognition of just how isolated many elderly members of the community had become during lockdown. Seeing first-hand the impact that loneliness and disconnection were having, he felt a strong need to do something meaningful. The project grew from a simple but powerful idea: that small acts of kindness and connection, like delivering a geranium, could lift spirits, spark conversation and remind people they are not forgotten.
“We’re not just delivering flowers, we’re delivering connection.”

Founder of Operation Geranium
Alongside the plant deliveries, Steve also launched a postcard initiative featuring artwork by local creatives, helping to combat loneliness and reconnect communities during periods of isolation. Tens of thousands of these postcards have since been distributed across the Island and beyond. For Steve, Operation Geranium has always been about more than flowers. It’s about connection and community resilience, bringing people together and reminding everyone that they are valued and not alone. His lifelong commitment to community work, from youth projects to NHS roles and large-scale local events, reflects a deep belief in the power of people working together. Operation Geranium is a continuation of that mission, rooted in compassion and growing stronger every year.
The idea was simple but deeply human, to bring people together through kindness.
Operation Geranium began when Steve in 2020 saw how isolated many elderly people had become during lockdown and wanted to make a meaningful difference. Operation Geranium brings moments of joy and connection to elderly people who may otherwise feel isolated or forgotten. A simple delivery becomes a meaningful human interaction, lifting spirits, sparking conversation and reminding them they are valued and part of a caring community. What started as a simple act delivering geraniums in the Ryde and Wootton area care homes to lift spirits and remind people they weren’t alone, quickly grew in partnership with Age UK Isle of Wight into an island-wide effort. Volunteers came together, hundreds of plants have been delivered and the impact is seen in the smiles of those receiving them.
