Why Did We Start Operation Geranium?

Operation Geranium was born out of recognition of just how isolated many elderly members of the community had become during lockdown. Seeing first-hand the impact that loneliness and disconnection were having, we felt a strong need to do something meaningful. The project grew from a simple but powerful idea: that small acts of kindness and connection, like delivering a geranium, could lift spirits, spark conversation and remind people they are not forgotten.

Operation Geranium began in 2020, when Steve saw how isolated many elderly people had become during lockdown and wanted to make a meaningful difference. What started as a simple act, delivering geraniums to care homes in the Ryde and Wootton area, quickly grew into something much bigger. In partnership with Age UK Isle of Wight, it became an island-wide effort, with volunteers coming together to deliver hundreds of plants and bring moments of joy and connection to those who may otherwise feel forgotten.

The idea was simple but deeply human, to bring people together through kindness.

For Steve' s work with Operation Geranium was recognised in 2024, when he was awarded the British Empire Medal in King Charles III’s Birthday Honours List. His lifelong commitment to community work, from youth projects to NHS roles and large-scale local events, reflects a deep belief in the power of people working together. Operation Geranium continues to grow from that foundation, rooted in compassion and making a difference year after year.
